WHAT IN WORLD DO YOU DO?
Greetings! my first entry since ‘HAPPY NEW YEAR’ day. Its been a rough eighteen days since the new year started. I caught the flu (+winter cold) presumably from our very own Christmas grandchild, four year old ‘Joy’. She’s precious. Dude caught it first, still has remnants symptoms and then I fell victim to the dreadful virus. A couple times I thought I was all better but “noooooo…..” After a nap or the following day I felt like a rag doll once again. UGH Still through it all and the mountains of kleenex I managed to log into the fantasy worlds I flutter around and have some fun.
Fun, to me, being busy in the Virtual World metaverse >>>>>>>>
Let’s see… in Olantic I took down all the Christmas objects from my shop there and began to put up for Valentines and miscellaneous (maybe a few pieces of furniture). Also, I’ve been the “Hostess with the Mostess” at the Silver Horses Pub along side marvelous DJ Leslie Kling and DJ Gary Kling, not at the same time! The each have own show lol. The English language is a bit confusing. Anyway, They are fantastic! We do some fancy dancy boot scooting twice a week. Gotta love that country music!
… in 3rg Rock I took down the Christmas shop I had on Vector, went to a couple DJ events and enjoyed some friends and music. Dawn Harbor who has the land where I am Estate and Mall Manager had already taken down the Holiday Skating pond I’d built early December on London Core with warm hot chocolate and free ice skates! Anyway… so there was a stark empty huge plaza just begging for some prims. I got right to work not even knowing what I was going to come up with, but knew it should be fun to walk around. Started with one of Dawn’s water fountain’s in the center and then it all just flowed and turned into a lovely garden with hedges and arbors surrounded by brick vine-covered walls nooks, a coffee area, a mixed bar and music area, plus a TP Directory Board for easy access to the shops.
… in Second Life I enjoyed some down time with my friend Judy Muircastle (who been a busy gal herself) at her amusement called HOBO Amusement Park. I laughed and relaxed and had the very best time… of course my favorite ride was the roller coaster (all my life I’ve loved rc’s). The Haunted House is great no matter what time of year and the bumper cars are a blast! Also visited my good friend Anan Eebus at her Art Gallery ‘Unveiled’ and had some tea :))
… Island Oasis I joined a Futuristic build theme contest and had the best time (2000 prims al
lowed whooooohooo) especially visiting the other great builder’s entries and being so inspired! Went horseback riding with friends Lion and Kat Ewry and Daisy Coronet and DJTommy Seetan, enjoyed some ice skating on Intoxicated, got to see and hear my old friend CECI Dover live and in avi! Huggable close as we crashed the stage area and ended on the sidewalks by the shops LOL VERY COZY~ a few days later when I popped in everyone was at the welcome center danciing on top of the IO Billboard… for what ever reason I had no idea but hopped right on and had a blast!
… WHAT i organized the Grand Opening Event asking my dear friend Torben Asp who puts on a marvelous light show to be our first guest! Poor Torben arrived as ‘mist’ but we all thought he fit right in with his particle show 😉 up next was Ichie Kamachi, a long time friend and excellent performer often singing in Dude and mine’s clubs and events over the year. She’s known as ‘The Voice’ singing blues, jazz, pop anything! My favorite part of Ichie is her cute little giggles. Love ya sis! After the Grand Opening the next day I cleaned up the empty beer cans, champage glasses and half eaten pieces of cake. The confetti was all over! Then I trotted over the park at Marvin and began setting up for WHAT’s first building contest. Love is in the air.
~PHEW~ you can see I’ve been busy and still there is lots to do in all my virtual grids. This year I really want to take more photos. Maybe even get into machinema 😉

JUDGEMENT DAY IS HERE
I have been Grid Hopping all over the metaverse… having too much fun! meeting so many nice folks! and seeing so many amazing builds! But today I must make some tough decisions and cut the twenty-one (yes 21) grids I’m currently a member of down to a logical playing number. I had said six (6) but maybe I’ll do 7 or 8 He he he Its so hard to pick. All have wonderful attributes and are amazing! During the month of December I visited each grid I’m a member of and wandered around feeling the invisible vibes that each grid gives. Some are calm, some are eXciting, some were funny and fun and some were just there.
We all look for different things when we are exploring the metaverse. My criteria for choosing the grids I will frequent the most starting off the New Year were: the people I got to know in each grid, the opportunities offered to veteran players like myself and to ‘newbies’, the economy system (some have none at all), the events the grid offers (like games and contests), and the founders. A friend asked me “don’t you evaluate the stability too?” No I don’t… since leaving SL to venture out into Open Source grids I have experienced many unstable and many technical difficulties on the os grids I’ve been playing over the last three years. It’s a given there will never be another SL (where most everything works) so the lower cost and excess prim usage and free uploads that os grids offer mean more to me than the stability. I don’t mind clearing my cache and re-logging. I don’t mind if I show up as a ruth or nakies or without hair LMAO It’s kind of fun and goes along with ‘remember when’ memories stored in my memory banks since first stepping into a virtual world.
Enuf’ about me and how I came to my decision… Here is the short list of the chosen few virtual worlds from my big list that I plan to frequent often in the new year!

Virtual World Eliminations
Greetings from the avatar Sunbeam Magic having too much fun lately hopping from grid to grid (or virtual world to virtual world) and reconnecting with old friends and meeting new friends and visiting many friends. I believe I have eliminated three of the 12 to 15 I play occasionally. # 1) this grid every time I tp I still lose my hair *annoying* plus they want to charge 5$ for each upload. With the majority of the os virtual worlds offering Free uploads I can not imagine why any grid owner would implement this practice in their new world #2) the second I ‘m eliminating is due to every time I go there no one is there … no one. I read good reports on ‘Hypergrid business magazine’ on how they are growing and were voted in the top grids, but I haven’t found that when I visited. #3) this world offers something most new grids don’t but they too want 5$ per upload and the land prices are comparable with all the other os grids so … anyway there are my justifications for taking those 3 off my list for my 2013 new year’s resolution. My hubby complains he is a ‘virtual world widow’ lol as I’m always exploring or chatting or joining this contest or going to this event on line while he feels neglected. So I am cutting my virtual world playing to half the worlds I have been exploring and joining since my ban from InWorst. I believe this will give me more time to share some quality time with my Dude! Who btw still prefers our legacy world Second Life.
I won’t publish the name of the grids I’m eliminating in an effort not to influence others. I believe each should make up their own minds and use their own personal criteria. I do have good friends in those worlds I’m putting at the bottom of my list to play in. But with grid hopping as population as it seems to have become I hope we will still run into each other from time to time. I won’t actually leave these virtual worlds as a member, I just won’t be going in on a regular basis. That said… when I do come up my top six virtual worlds I will publish that list. Now, I have about two weeks left to decide which other virtual worlds will be eliminated from my list of most fun grids imho ! so I must run off and pop in a world or two today and hopefully run into some friends and some fun. Stay tuned.
Cyaz around the metaverse! Walk in the Sunshine!
WHAT’s IN A NAME?
In Virtual Worldz you get to pick any name you want! YAY! well in the beginning when Dude and I first started (Second Life ~ 4/2005) they gave you lists and lists of last names to choose from… but your first name that was your choice. My very first name was ‘Sunbeam Jewell’ and Dude was ‘Pocketbook Writer’ (a die hard Beatles fan lol). We really got into the ‘partying’ part of SL and being mature and married forever thought we could handle it. NOT! During our five years in SL we often decided VW was destroying our RL existence and would kill off our avatars and accounts and say”Never again!” . HA! within a couple months we made up new rules for us to follow and would create another avatar and try again.
Here are a few of the names I can remember just to show you how many we had: Sunbeam Jewell, Pocketbook Writer, Mimzy Runningbear, AAcme Skytower, Ruby Glaz, Samspade Atlas, Tootsie Hirsch, Slo Pokie, Tehrina Atlas, Ijust Stand, Gidget Pick, Kohana Schimmer, Cinnamon Nightfire, AAbbee Fall, AAcme Fall, Venus Moonshadow, Virtual Builder, Evvie Silverweb, Abel Lastchance, Sunbeam Magic, Duderz Lebowski… I know there were many others lol but 22 seems quite a lot to me 🙂 We’ve been human, dragons, mermaids, tinies, fairys, dogs, and just plain odd looking avatars like AAcme’s current one:
Some say you can tell the type of person an avatar is just by the name they choose. And now with Open Source grids many grids allow you to choose your last name too. The ‘Dark’ names (the ones I call Dark) are scary like “Monster Gonnakillya” or “Nyour Face” ) often are used just for roleplay in Vampire venues or the such. Many just want to shock you and enjoy griefing or harassing. Then there are the ‘Sex’ names like “Pussy Wet” or “Longjohn Dong” lol. You know what they are all about!
With so many VW grids now available, many are using the same name in each grid. So if you are new to Virtual Worldz my advice is choose a name you like and you feel enhances your personality. A name says a lot more than you may think!
RL vs. Metaverse
HELLLLLLLLLLLLO! I’m back …. sorry folks, my computer died a month ago (registry issues) and trying for two weeks to fix it myself I about gave up! ugh!!! I did have access to the Dude’s computer, but his is sooooooooooo different I felt like a foreigner who didn’t know the language struggling just to survive each moment and hoping I won’t fatally break something by hitting the wrong key. Talk about trepidation!
For the last six to seven years I have been a Metraverse Junkie! Its the first thing I do each morning with coffee. Email, FB, Poker, Games and Grids… and to believe this all started with ‘Pong’ LMAO! Anyway after getting hooked on grid games, starting with Second Life, and then when ‘open sim’ became available and you got free photo uploads, and imports, and could virtually ‘build and rezz for free’ I signed up with at least a dozen or more new worlds to explore. I must admit I was probably hopping these grids and sitting upright for 10+ hours per day. Yaaaa! A total genuine bona fide additive grid junkie! Sometimes working on a special project, such as the InWorldz Home and Residences Exposition 2011 I found myself staying up all night to work in the quiet wonder of the pixelated colors and objects glowing likes ghosts of the past and future escaping from my 22″ LED screen into my living room. My imagination went wild changing my avatar from being a mermaid one week and a pixie the next, or a Steampunk Lady, moving through the regions fluttering around like a butterfly ~ free.
With a broken wing, one can not fly so I learned to fill my real time with good old fashioned techniques of times past. Of course the first activity I drove into was reading (Recommend: Eragon series by Chritopher Paolini, four book series! Excellent!). I found myself staying up to 4 am in the morning (reminiscence of Grid Games) with my books. Still lost in the ‘fantasy’ escape, cheering on the Dragon and running through the fields in a different time zone. My mind interlinked with the characters and enjoying the moment.
Then came jigsaw puzzle working out in the sunbeams and sunshine, Vitamin D and warm feelings . A real rl mind game, jigsaw puzzles. A challenge with many benefits. And as I’m outside in the sunlight my neighbors come strolling bye and say “Hello”… real live people, no bubbles, no awkward stances or poses yep its the real thing. Your virtual friends of pixies, and mermaids, and Lady and Lords are just as real live too surrounded by imaginative creations built with virtual wood cubes… amazing!
I must say I’m happy to have my computer back, but at the same time I hope my self control will allow me to enjoy the metaverse in moderation. It was there when needed to fill time as the wait began for retirement days. I know I’ll always be a daily fix kind of gal who must turn on the love lights of the www basking a beautiful pale sheen on my cheek bones as I fly from site to site, soaking up knowledge and learning something everything. Then I remember, I must soak up the Sunbeams too to survive both worlds.
Hop on the Wave of the Grid Players Playland
After hearing for months about this wonderful amazing FREE software that gives you your own personal playland to run on your very own pc desktop we finally took the plunge. At first we were a wee bit nervous it might be too intimidating or way over our limited techy experiences. Smiles, it was so easy to set up and omg smooth running and quick ! and lag? what’s that? It’s virtual gone with your own private ‘New World Studio’. After reading ‘Hypergrid Business’ article “Free Open Sim in a Snap” by Maria Korolov we were rearing to give it a try. We’re so new into it I don’t want to give out any misinformation but let me tell you, if you love to build, terra, change, tweak, experiment and want to learn the ins and outs of grid and sim administration then join this new wave of growing metaverse users enjoying this great opportunity. “Amazing” it what we keep saying each time we log into our own little world, letting our imaginations run wild with prims and pixels.
As we get to know more about how to hook up to others (via Hypergrid/Stargate) and how to allow friends in I’ll share the info. Enjoy! http://code.google.com/p/newworldstudio/wiki/QuickStart
And the FUN Continues
What’s your idea of fun when it comes to internet options? Many enjoy Facebook, keeping in touch with loved ones and friends, sharing pictures and quotes and such. Many blog speaking their minds or just dilly dallying. Many play games like Poker or Bejewelled or action games like shoot ’em ups and racing. And many play Virtual Worlds. What kind of fun do they offer you say… well, there are so many ways to have fun in VW I probably will miss a few ways but will list those I do know.
First there is ‘role play’. Role play is where you dress and talk your avatar up in the ways of themed sim offering role playing. You could be a dragon, a fairy, a mermaid, a cowboy or an Indian. You could visit Berlin as it was back in the 1920’s or visit Starfleet set in the future or try Steampunk which is gaining great popularity in many virtual worlds. In role play you create your own ‘back story’ (where you tell where you came from and what powers if any you may have and explain how you arrived) in relationship to the themed sim’s storyline. At first its seems a bit awkward then as you get into the swing of things you can’t wait to see what may develop next. Some sims are very strict with role playing rules and guidelines, some sims are loose and more impromtu style of role play. It’s up to you which you decide to try and what’s more fun for you.
Second there is shoot ’em games! Want to kill some zombies??? or show your skill at archery or start or join a gang and rival other gangs? Many virtual worlds have all the tools you’ll need including bandages when you get shot, doctors and hospitals to heal you or on the fantasy sims healing powers are built in for your special avatar and some can even bring you back from the dead. How fun is that?
Third is racing, automobiles, motorcylces, boats, horses and even airplanes. You can win awards like trophies, virtual monies or a creative item such as a house or new automobile etc. You can learn to do stunts too. Contests are held often and like any competitive sport practice makes perfect. It’s amazing how the hours melt away as your racing for practice or in a scheduled contest. One of the best things about this style of fun in a virtual world is meeting folks just like yourself from all over the globe who also love the trill of a race and are interested in automobiles, motorcycles or whatever form of transportation you’ve chosen. So if you love racing then this is for you.
Next there is surfing (my favorite). Grab a board, find a wave and jump in the virtual oceans and away you go. Learn to do tricks like a flip, barrell, cutbacks, hang ten or off the lip. With surfing there is a whole community who love the beach sims and have organized teams and started associations and have their own magazines and judges. Contests are held often and usually last half a day or longer just like in real life. Many virtual surfers also have or still surf in the real world. At first you think, I’ll never learn to do that but many veteran surfers are willing to teach you the ropes and the right buttons to push and you’ll be amazed how real it feels as you shoot the curl on these virtual waves. Speaking of waves, in the beginning there was just one kind… as technology progressed so did the virtual surf waves and now there are many styles to try. Surfers love to party when they are not on the water so if you’re looking for a social community to join and love the sunshine, then try the virtual surf scene.

More FUN in Virtual Worlds
Yesterday I talked about music and virtual worlds. Today let’s dance! Yes one can puppeteer their avatar to dance, alone or with a partner or with a group. In the beginning dances were done by clicking on a ‘pose ball’, pink for ladies and blue for the gentlemen. There are also large floating Dance Balls (allows 20 or more avatars to dance and holds 20 or more dances) and Dance Systems where you choose which dance you want from a menu and can change at will. You can also make your own HUD (Heads Up Display) where you program in your favorite dances.
Then there is the ‘chim’ which you wear, most popular place to wear is the hip. All the dances in the chim are choreographed in a sequence of your choice. The ‘chim’ is similar to the HUD except the dances loop and you do not choose which dance to activate. The chim is invisible and only your friends can click on your chim, or you can send them an invite to dance with you step by step.
Virtual worlds have many specialized dances too, like the River Dance which is very popular with the Irish members and the surfing community (another blog subject to come) or John Travolta’s Saturday Night Live dance or one of my favorites Michael Jackson’s Thriller dance.
So pop on in a virtual world and let’s dance! your feet won’t ache and you can literally ‘Dance ALL Night’… have FUN!

Different Types of “FUN”
Fun: adjective for good, happy
Fun means many things to different people. Most people see fun as amusement, enjoyable, merry and entertaining. In Virtual Worlds everyone is always commenting on your play by saying “… as long as you’re having fun”. Most people define fun as something that makes you smile or giggle. You can create your own fun or join in someone else’ fun. The beauty of Virtual Worlds is there is always some one making up fun things to do. Virtual Worlds can be very social and everyone, young or old, skinny or fat, tall or short is invited to the party. Parties in Virtual Worlds can be themed parties for holidays, birthdays (or as they say in VW ‘rezz day’ > the day you signed up to play in a VW), or come as you are parties for no reason at all. Parties can be held at a club, a home, a full sim or anywhere there may be more than three or four avatars gathered together.
Fun to some in Virtual Worlds mean causing havoc and stress often referred to as ‘Drama’. These type of people thrive on seeing others struggling to understand what the hell is going on. They push your human emotion buttons with words and actions they would never say or do in the real world, because hey what can you do back, break their virtual bones? Not to mention they are totally ‘anonymous’, you have no idea who is behind the avatar pulling the strings to make this avatar act the way that they are. Most players try to avoid these types of avatars at all costs, but as everyone knows sometimes you just can’t help but step in their mess especially if you are a person of integrity, or they are such good manipulators you don’t even know you’ve been had.
One of the best things about Virtual Worlds is the music and entertainment (like poetry readings or stage plays). Many many budding musical artists can get up on a stage and sing their hearts out for you. They could not do this in the real world due to extreme stage fright or fear of failure. But as an avatar they have no fear. In their minds’ eye, it’s not really them singing or playing the music, its the avatar.
Another great party entertainer is the Disc Jockey. In Virtual Worlds you can attend parties where the DJ is playing all your favorite songs. You might hear a song you haven’t heard for ages or hear a new song that rocks your world. Some DJ’s are also real life DJs. Some have always wanted to DJ and the Virtual World has given them the opportunity to give it a go.
To me, music and fun go together like toast and jam! So if you love music, love fun and want to try something entirely different enter a Virtual World and go to a party! Don’t worry about being alone, the crowd will welcome you by name! Have FUN!
